Some very belated congratulations

Good grief! Talk about late out of the gate … We’ve been so busy lately in the restaurant and with catering, we’ve fallen way behind on our site. That would be fine, such things happen when you’re a relatively small operation and there loads of things needing your attention, but we’ve neglected some people that should have been given a tip of the hat and a, “Well done!”

We’re referring to this year’s The Saltys, Saint John’s first ever social media awards. It was thrilling for us because we found ourselves nominated in one of the categories. It was completely unexpected and we we’re thrilled. We didn’t grab the top honour but, as they say at the Oscars, we got a real charge out of the nomination and felt privileged to me in the running.

We want to send a big congratulations out to this year’s winners:

Mel won in the category we found ourselves in and we think it was well-deserved. The big night was held at SJAH, just down the street from us. Fran made it to the big night but Bill was stuck up in Frederiction. (They’re the two helping out with our social media efforts.)

Once again, “Bravo!” to all the winners and nominees. This is meant to be an annual event, so we’re looking forward to next year’s awards and hope this thing just grows and grows (kind of like social media itself).

Lunch and dinner – Happy Valentine’s Day!

We have our Valentine’s dinner set for this evening, but today for lunch we’re featuring:

  • Pasta Dish … a creamy pesto pasta with sauteed portabello mushrooms, roasted reds and spinach; finished with fresh Parmesan cheese
  • Burger … Bacon and cheddar burger – comes with a side choice

Of course, this evening’s dinner is for the romantically inclined, or even those who just like an excuse to be with each other.

It’s our Valentine’s dinner. Have a look at the menu (.pdf format). We think you’ll like it! You can reserve by simply giving us a call at 652-3354.

And hat’s off to our friends at happinez! Via Uptown Saint John on Facebook, we found out the Ottawa Citizen has picked them as one of the 18 best places to kiss in Canada. (We knew something was going on in those quiet corners.)

Have a great day everyone and we hope to see you this evening!

Over the moon with our social media nomination

Saint John has its first ever social media awards, The Saltys – a celebration of the Saint John Social Media Community. It’s set for February 17 just down the road from us at the Saint John Ale House. And guess what? Urban Deli is a nominee! We’re over the moon!

We’re nominated in the category “Best Use of Social Media in a Campaign” for customer engagement. Actually, it’s really our customers who should be getting the tip of the hat. You guys have been fabulous on our blog, Facebook page and on Twitter. And you’ve kept us on our toes!

We’re not always as on top of things as we would like. Being a small operation, our main focus is the kitchen and the restaurant, so we can’t always be engaging people online to the extent we would like to. So for the record, we would like to say a big “Thank you!” to everyone for the RTs and wonderful comments we’ve seen in our feeds.

Huge congratulations as well to all the nominees in all the categories. Looking at the list is a bit like looking at a list of friends. We’re pretty sure we know everyone there.

Urban Deli has been using social media for some time now. We started on Twitter in March of 2009 – that’s almost two years ago – and started our Facebook page not long after. It was lot of figuring out how to use this social media thing (we bumbled a lot with the Facebook part initially) but it became very clear, very soon that social media was about one thing: people.

So it really is a lot like being in the restaurant where we get to interact with our customers face to face. With social media, we do the same thing, just not face to face.

Once again, we’re very excited that Saint John now has its own social media awards — The Saltys — and even more excited to see we’ve been nominated.

By the way, the online voting is now on. Cast your vote while you can and we hope to see all of you February 17 for the big party!

Thank you again Saint John!

Upcoming townhall with FUSION Saint John

Yes, we’ve been a little slow out of the gate as far as the new year and our online activity goes but we haven’t been slow as far as the actual Urban Deli goes. We’ve been active!

One thing we wanted to make you aware of, if you aren’t already, is what is going on January 13th (next Wednesday). FUSION Saint John will be presenting a townhall as, “Leader of the Official Opposition David Alward talks to FUSION Saint John.” It’s an informational meeting running from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

For more information or to RSVP, visit FUSION on their Facebook page.

We imagine it will be an interesting evening and we’re thrilled FUSION chose the Urban Deli to put this on. By the way, to keep up on all their upcoming events, you’ll find it all here on the FUSION Saint John site.

Disclosure: why we keep saying ‘we’

Full disclosure, of a sort.We have one full week under our belt and today we head into week two with just as much enthusiasm — and a better idea of what to expect. Last week we seemed to get busier each day with Friday probably the busiest.

Today we thought it would be a good idea to explain a bit about why we keep referring to “we” here on the site and a bit about who “we” are.

To begin with, the Urban Deli is the dream of, and owned by, Liz. But it’s a team of people — up front and behind the scenes. They make the deli “the deli” and so it’s best to refer to “we.”

Maybe more importantly, however, we don’t want to bamboozle anyone into thinking Liz is doing the writing. When Liz posts something, she’ll post it as Liz. She hasn’t posted anything as yet for two reasons: she’s way to busy with all the daily running of the Urban Deli to find time to do it properly and (let’s be honest) she’s a bit shy about writing and having everyone see it. (We’re working on that.)

I’m doing the writing and I am Bill. I have a couple of sites of my own, Writelife and Piddleville, and I’m what Liz refers to as “the web guy.” I put the site together for her and I more or less maintain it, the Urban Deli Twitter stream (@urbandeli) and the Facebook page (a whole other story!). (About the Facebook problem? See this little ramble.)

I asked Liz yesterday how long I had known her and we figured it to be 11 or so years. (I told her it felt like a lot longer!) We met and worked together back in Alberta and, when Liz moved back east, she brought me and Gord with her. (Gord’s another behind the scenes character — sometimes in front — at the Urban Deli). I was at the deli before they began work on it (it was a disaster) and I’ve seen it transform. I speak to Liz almost constantly so I have a good idea about what’s going on and when I don’t I harass her until she gets it to me.

Liz could tell you many stories about me just as I could tell many about her. It’s like the old Mexican stand-off thing: we can’t blackmail each other because the other knows to much about us!

I’m essentially a writer-editor, to a large extent from the marketing side of things, with a good familiarity with the Internet, social media tools, and other tech related things. But compared to actual web designers, or programmers, I’m not really a tech guy. I guess you could say I’m an informed amateur.

And that’s about it. I’m Bill, “the web guy.” Liz is the owner gal. The Urban Deli is a crew of people.

And that’s why we keep saying “we.”

Update on our Facebook schmozzle

We just wanted to let you know what is up with the Urban Deli on Facebook. It’s simple: nothing. 🙁

Unfortunately we’re dealing with a schmozzle and can’t access our account! It gets more alarming each day because when last we looked, we had 89 fans (many thanks!).

What is really frustrating is that we’ve tried to contact Facebook but their approach seems to be to simply ignore any and all emails. We’ve emailed a number of their support addresses but, despite waiting a month or so, have received nothing.

The problem exists in the email address associated with the account. Facebook appears to allow only one account to be associated with an address and when the same email address was associated with a personal account, access to the Urban Deli account vanished like smoke.

So .. we are working to fix this because we have things to put up there and we don’t want people to think we’re ignoring them. But currently we’re at a loss as to what to do to get this straightened out.

By the way, if you have any ideas on how to fix this mess, please let us know. It is very, very frustrating.

Hmm … Guess you could say this was our first official blog rant.

Hope your weekend has been good. And we hope to see you next week at the deli!
