Our holiday hours and have a Deli-icious Christmas!

Urban Deli Christmas 2010: Rob, Michael-Ann, Liane, Janna, Fran, Craig, Dale, Gord, Elizabeth, Alan, Vaughan, and Jordan. Missing in the photo: Greg, Phil, Dave, Jenny and Candy.

Wow! It’s here! Like you, we’ve been so busy we barely noticed it coming up on us. But it’s Christmas Eve day now and we know what tomorrow is, so we wanted to pause a moment and say a big thank you to everyone: our wonderful staff, suppliers, all the other Uptown businesses and, with a really big emphasis, our marvelous customers.

Not only have our customers kept us busy, a lot of them have given us great ideas for new things to introduce and on occasion have helped us “taste test” new items to see if they were up to their standards and ours.

It’s amazing how much they’ve helped us this year. So …

Thank you! And we hope everyone, everywhere has a Christmas to remember and a New Year that flies by because it’s so full of new people and things. And may we all be prosperous! Happy holidays!

Speaking of which, these are our hours over the holidays:

Holiday Hours:

  • Dec. 27 to 30: Regular Hours
  • Dec 31 (New Year’s Eve): Special New Year’s Eve dinner seating at 7:00pm — please call ahead (ask for Liz) and reserve.
  • Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day): Enjoy your hangover at the Deli! Breakfast only 9:00am to 3:00pm.

And we’re back to regular hours on January 2, 2011.

Help us help our inner-city families

We’re looking for some volunteers for Sunday, October 10th (a week from tomorrow) in order to help serve a Thanksgiving dinner to inner-city families in support of the Salvation Army.

This is “no charge” meal for the families and we are planning to have two seatings (4pm and 5:30pm).

Can you lend a hand? Here’s what we’re looking for help with:

  • prep-workers
  • servers
  • and clean-up.

We think it’s going to be a great day with food and people and families. If you can lend a hand, please contact us at 506.652.3354 (DELI). Just leave us your name and contact number. (You can also contact us using our contact page.)

Thank you!

Canada Day and what we’re up to

We’ll be doing something a little different for Canada Day. The Urban Deli will be closed, but kind of open too. Here’s what we’re doing:

The restaurant will be closed. However, we’ll have a stand directly outside our front doors selling food and cold drinks (alongside the other vendors).

We’re taking it to the streets, so to speak.

We’ll start off with breakfast sandwiches at 9:00am (served on an english muffin) and also have our own scratch lemonade, home-made ice tea and other cold drinks available. If you like samosas, we’ll have those too (not made by the Deli) — five different kinds of samosas that include beef, chicken, lamb, vegetarian and sweet potato.

Once the breakfast sandwiches are either sold out or 11:00am hits, we’ll be switching it up and selling our pulled pork & slaw on an english muffin.

We’re normally closed on Sundays and holidays so all of us (our staff) can enjoy the days, but this time we wanted to be there in Uptown Saint John. It’s Canada Day and we expect the Uptown to be hopping.

And who in their right mind would want to miss a Canada Day in the Port City?

Liz and the Deli in the Telegraph-Journal

Herb Duncan has written a little something up for today’s Telegraph-Journal. It’s called Raising the Bar at the Urban Deli and it’s actually an astonishing piece when you consider that Liz is actually kind of shy about being in the spotlight.

Yes, if you’ve met her that’s a bit hard to believe but it’s true. Herb’s article is absolutely wonderful, though admittedly we’re not really objective on this one. 🙂

We’ve been a bit silent online recently (this happens every so often). If you read the piece in the paper, you may get a sense of why. Quite often we get so busy with the business of the restaurant we neglect the business of the Deli online.

We plan to get that changed and get the stream flowing again soon.

We’ve had a few winners

On our counter we have a bowl for business cards. If you’ve put your card in there, or if you do the next time you visit the Urban Deli, you’ll be in the running to win a little something from us. But first things first, we have a couple of winners already.

The first winner of a free lunch at the Deli is Reid Southwick. Reid is a reporter from the Telegraph-Journal. His was the first card we drew from the jar.

We also had another winner. We drew Mike Hachey’s card. Mike’s from Califorina Custom Auto. Congratulations to both Reid and Mike and thank you for taking the time to visit and have a bite at the Urban Deli.

We’ve decided to do this with a bit more regularity so our next draws will be in the first week of March and the first week of every month thereafter. Also, with that next draw (early March) we’ll actually do two draws. One for a book, another for a free lunch.

The first book up for grabs is Tatya: Moscow Nights, Book I of Miron Rezun’s Tatya Trilogy. The other draw will be for a free lunch at the Urban Deli. If we draw yours, you’ll be joining Rick and Mike in the winner’s circle!

An update on our Haiti relief effort

Through customer and staff support, the Urban Deli donated all the sales for our $2 and $3 Frites from three Saturdays in January (16th, 23rd, and 30th). We also had a donation jar on our counter so if anyone chose to do so, they could contribute as well.

We’ve managed to raise a little over $400 and are planning to get it over to the Canadian Red Cross today. We’re also going to see if there is a way to get the federal government to match it (which would make it an over $800 contribution). If what we understand is correct, the “matching dollars” program ends tomorrow. Our fingers are crossed that we’ll be able to get it matched by Ottawa.

The picture below is of two of our staff, Lianne and Ashely. Lianne is holding the fish bowl that was on the front counter where customers could donate and Ashley is holding some of our fries!

Lianne and Ashley of the Urban Deli holding donations for Haiti as well as ourfries!

We’ve been very quiet recently on the site and elsewhere (like Twitter). We’re hoping to change this very soon! One of the reasons for being less than active online is that we’re exploring a few changes. Basically, we’d like to put things up that aren’t necessarily Urban Deli related but related to food generally, Saint John and especially the Uptown.

We think if all we talk about is the Deli we would get very tiresome very soon — kind of like the guy at the party who only talks about himself. Of course, we still want to talk about the Deli, just  not exclusively.

In the meantime, thank you to everyone for the donations to our Haiti relief effort and please keep in mind the country’s problems aren’t going away anytime soon. You can donate anytime through organizations like Red Cross, World Vision and many others.
