Up until the first week or so of July 2009, Urban Deli only existed in the head of our owner Liz. Then, on July 13, 2009, it was real.

Yes, today is our birthday! It’s Urban Deli’s second anniversary!

We’ve had another wonderful year with the restaurant and our catering. It’s been a year filled with intriguing people and superb events.

We absolutely love being a part of Uptown Saint John. As with last year, we have oodles of people to thank: our fabulous staff, the tremendous vendors and suppliers we get to work with and, of course, the people of Saint John. Our customers are fabulous.

As small thank you, today we have free samples of our desserts with your meal. So we hope you drop by and give us a chance to say, “Thanks!”

And just in case your interested, below is a list of what visitors to the Deli appear to liked best from our menu in our last year.

Winners of the Live Life Awards were announced and as far as we could tell, every body attending had a sensational time. We sure did.

Congratulations to our friends at Thandi’s! They walked away with the award for Best Restaurant of the Year. There were three of us in the category — Thandi’s, Saint John Ale House and Urban Deli.

We’d be disappointed except we were thrilled. Thandi’s is a great representative of the Uptown’s best. As is SJ Ale House.

It was our second year being nominated in that category so we’re hoping third time’s the charm.

Apart from our congratulations to all the people and businesses that won (and all the nominees), we’d like to let everyone at Uptown Saint John know we truly appreciate all the time, effort and commitment they put into the Live Life Awards and everything they’re doing for the Uptown. Now, here are all the winners!

We’re excited partly because the evening proceedings will be held “… in the minimalist ‘white room,’ an architectural gem located on the second floor of 115 Prince William Street.”

And we’re excited because we’re up for an award.

In the ‘Best Restaurant’ category, the nominees are Saint John Ale House, Thandi’s and yours truly, Urban Deli. Best of luck to all three of us!

It’s worth having a look at all the nominees in all the categories. It’s a marvelous cornucopia of the Uptown’s great businesses and some of the exceptional accomplishments over the last year.

If you’re attending the glam event, we hope to see you there. We’ll be on hand and hope to say ‘Hi!’ to everyone.

See you tonight!

We were thrilled to find ourselves nominated in the Best Restaurant of the Year category — but the competition is stiff! We’re in there with two of the Uptown’s best: Thandi’s and Saint John Ale House. (Congrats to both!)

Having enjoyed time at both, we can attest to the fact that both are very deserving — we love the food at both! Uptown is the place to be for Saint John’s best dining. Of course, we’re a bit biased on that subject.

Last year, we found ourselves in three categories, including Best Restaurant. Thandi’s was also nominated last year. As it turns out, in 2010 Opera Bistro took the top honours for Best Restaurant.

You can go over all the categories and all the nominees on the Uptown Saint John site. Or you can let Tracy tell you all about them:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Winners will be announced at the gala event on June 9th. Tickets are available at the Uptown Saint John offices at 40 King Street or by calling 633-9797.

Congratulations to all the nominees in all the categories. Let’s all celebrate by getting out and living life in Uptown Saint John!

If you’ve ever seen the movie Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Burl Ives), you’re probably aware that it was based on the play by Tennessee Williams (who apparently didn’t care for what the filmmakers did to his play).

Now you have a chance to see the play itself. The Saint John Theatre Company is putting it on at the Imperial Theatre, May 19th to 21st. Directed by Stephen Tobias, the play talks about mendacity (untruthfulness). A favourite quote is from the character Big Daddy, who says, “There ain’t nothin’ more powerful than the odor of mendacity…You can smell it. It smells like death.”

In describing the play, the SJ Theatre Company says,

On a Southern plantation a family celebrates the birthday of their patriarch. A number of evils poison the gaiety: greed, sins of the past and desperate, clawing hopes for the future …

We bring all this up because Urban Deli is a sponsor of the play and had some tickets to give away for the opening night, Thursday the 19th. And they’ve now been drawn. The winner is Charles E. Frees-Melvin. Congratulations Charles!

We hope every one can get out and catch the play. It’s one of Tennessee Williams best known plays and there are few better than Tennessee for arresting, lyrical language and drama.

One last thing … The cat reference? That would be the character known as Maggie, the cat (played by Liz Taylor in the film version; played by Emily Bartlett in the current stage production).

You can get more information on the play and order tickets at the Imperial Theatre. And if you want to read an article on the production, see ‘Intense family drama’ from CanadaEast.

Good grief! Talk about late out of the gate … We’ve been so busy lately in the restaurant and with catering, we’ve fallen way behind on our site. That would be fine, such things happen when you’re a relatively small operation and there loads of things needing your attention, but we’ve neglected some people that should have been given a tip of the hat and a, “Well done!”

We’re referring to this year’s The Saltys, Saint John’s first ever social media awards. It was thrilling for us because we found ourselves nominated in one of the categories. It was completely unexpected and we we’re thrilled. We didn’t grab the top honour but, as they say at the Oscars, we got a real charge out of the nomination and felt privileged to me in the running.

We want to send a big congratulations out to this year’s winners:

Anne McShane (@feelgoodsj) — Twitter Person of the Year

Hemmings House Pictures — Best Facebook Page

Saint John Ale House, Peter Stoddart – Coolest Blog

Mel Norton Campaign Team — Best Use of Social Media in a Campaign

Mel won in the category we found ourselves in and we think it was well-deserved. The big night was held at SJAH, just down the street from us. Fran made it to the big night but Bill was stuck up in Frederiction. (They’re the two helping out with our social media efforts.)

Once again, “Bravo!” to all the winners and nominees. This is meant to be an annual event, so we’re looking forward to next year’s awards and hope this thing just grows and grows (kind of like social media itself).

*For reservations call 506-214-3618

Opening and trial nights are never easy for new restaurant owners and their staff. There is always something that is unfinished to the perfectionist owner who wants nothing more than to be a crowd pleaser for his or her future clientele. The old saying about having one opportunity to make a good first impression is true and it can be overwhelming.

On Friday, March 26, I and 14 others in our party were lucky invitees to the friends and family night at Bourbon Quarter. The menu presented for the evening was $20 with the following choices:

Appetizer:

Grilled Watermelon with goat cheese, cherry tomatoes, spring greens and buttermilk vinaigrette
or

Louisiana Fried Clams

Entrée:

Crisp Skin Salmon with roasted fingerling potatoes, julienne vegetables, fried onions and beet butter
or

Supreme Chicken Breast with truffle whipped potatoes and glazed vegetables

For dessert (for an additional $5) there was Crème Brulée, Madagascar vanilla bean (meaning “burnt cream”).

The review:

I’ve taken a hybrid of my own personal experience during my evening as well as those of other people in our party.

Like most foodies, I had to try everything regardless of any extra cost.

Grilled Watermelon: When the grilled watermelon appetizer arrived the presentation was beautiful. The flavours were something I have not tasted since visiting the Rossmount in St. Andrews just before Christmas. Those of us who tried it (including myself ) were using our pinky finger and spoons or forks to capture the remaining buttermilk vinaigrette on the plate. Need I say more?

Louisiana Fried Clams: This was a great idea but the consensus at the table was that this appetizer needs work. There is always one dish for a new restaurant that will be their nemesis. Owners love feedback and I shared mine with Chef Brad. (Our nemesis at the Urban Deli, and as simple as it sounds, was our homemade baked beans.)

Crisp Skin Salmon: OMG! I don’t think they could have cooked the salmon any better; the flavor was delicious and the plate presentation was perfect. It was a nice follow-up to the Watermelon appetizer.

Supreme Chicken Breast: The chicken was cooked to perfection (mine was) and there were a couple of dishes that were on the cooler side but tasty to the hungry visitor.

Dessert: Crème Brulee was the intent and as it turned out…someone forgot the dessert torch for the brulee; therefore, it was more of a custard (a very good custard too!). When we finished, everyone’s dish was empty.

Plate presentation at Bourbon Quarter is beautifully simple. I haven’t seen their static menu or their pricing. For this friends and family night our cost for two for the evening was $116 not including the gratuity. Our service was excellent….Ashley, who also works at the Urban Deli, did a phenomenal job given the size of our party!

Wine was only available by the glass. Beer, tap beer, martinis, cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks were also being served by bartender extraordinaire Gordon, former manager of Sebastian. Mike Verner is hiring a sommelier from Ontario. We should see a real focus on wine and food pairings in the future.

The Bourbon Quarter room with its renovations was trendy, upscale and comfortable. The renovations would have had more of an impact if you had visited the location prior to it being Bourbon Quarter. Vision goes a long way. I could feel a bit of the same flare from the designers of Thandi’s, who also did Bourbon Quarter. The end result? It works for both restaurants.

Thank you to Mike Verner, Sean Verner and their families, Chef Brad Richard, and all the staff. Great work!

Visit Bourbon Quarter at 112 Prince William Street, Uptown Saint John.

We’re almost through that long haul of winter without a holiday (New Year’s until Easter weekend), and you probably have some cabin fever kicking in. So, if that is correct and you’re looking to get out this weekend, let this be a guide to get you started.

The Boardwalk is always bound to have something going on and here is a sampling of what to expect:

SJAH (Saint John Ale House) is having their weekly Friday Night Social Club that’ll feature a cocktail competition. This week’s cocktail is Long Island Iced Tea. Come down before 10 PM and you may be lucky enough to be a guest judge. Last week’s cocktail showdown featured Singapore Slings, and co-owner Pete Stoddard won 4 votes over 2 against Shawn Horgan. (See Pete and Shawn in the accompanying picture.) @SJAH_NB

Lemongrass / Peppers Pub have their Friday After Work Special, from 3-7 PM. $5 Guinness & $4.75 Picaroons draught.

Grannans has its weekly Jazz Night featuring Kindred Brothers from 6-8 PM.

Boilerworks will have 90s drink throwback prices.

Elsewhere Uptown, don’t miss out on:

Saint John’s only brewpub, Big Tide Brewing Company, on Princess St, has an ever-changing selection of their own beer, brewed by Wendy Papadopoulos. This weekend they have Whistlepig Stout, Irish Red Ale, Hemp Pale Ale, and for the first time, Honey Brown Ale, all on tap.

Happinez Wine Bar, across the street from Big Tide, will have a wide selection, as always, of wine by the glass or bottle. Beer, by the bottle, is also available along with some spirits. Be sure to sign up early for some upcoming events. Check the website for full details.

Be sure to also hit up Thandi on Canterbury St. for Asian fusion, Saigon Noodle on Union for some Pho, Sense of Tokyo for deliciously fresh Sushi, and of course there is Opera Bistro and the Urban Deli. Be sure to plug your favourite place in the comments if I’ve missed something you think other readers will be interested in. Cheers!

I’m sure that you immediately thought of an answer but probably then got to several other candidates. I can’t really pinpoint an exact answer for this question myself but I have a few beers I’d like to write about and then, after reading, you can comment about some of your favourites to share with me and other readers.

I really love British-style ales and the best place to get them around the Maritimes, even cask-conditioned (unpasteurized so it is still alive in the keg), is from Granite in Halifax (check out Henry House on Barrington St). I love their Best Bitter, Ringwood, and Peculiar. British ales will normally be blonde to brown in colour due to the medium to rich dark malts, with a great hop appeal in the nose, and a moderate to heavy bitterness that invites another drink. Alcohol content normally ranges from as low as 3% on session brews up to 8% and sometimes higher in old ales and Winter warmers.

Locally, Picaroons has a couple of products that come to mind – Blonde Ale and Best Bitter although they have several ales available in bottles and on tap. I’ll often order the Blonde Ale at Urban Deli by the bottle, as it’s quite palatable for most food due to it being so middle of the road with toasted honey nut oat malt and hops and a creamy mouth feel.

The Best Bitter is much deeper in dark malts and noticeably bitter. You can pick up both by the 500 ml bottle at ANBL and at SJAH you can grab the Blonde Ale by bottle and Best Bitter on tap. Shadow Lawn Inn, Barnwood, and Pomodori in Rothesay, Happinez and Callahan’s in Uptown SJ, and Vintage Bistro & Lounge in Hampton all sell Picaroons products.

Fullers London Pride, available on ANBL shelves in a 500 ml bottle, is also a great example of British ale and it could be my favourite import because it is the closest to what I love about real ale that is available in a bottle – and is a truly balanced ale with a tad of thirst inducing astringency. Pumphouse, from Moncton, also specializes in ales but are often in the North American styles – all very excellent though and is sold at UD and other fine establishments.

Nothing beats a crisp cold lager on a hot summer’s day. Lagers are brewed differently than ales as they are brewed at colder temperatures for longer periods of time. This creates higher costs for a brewer, especially craft breweries, who have limited equipment that is tied up longer, among other things, if making a lager. Due to these reasons, you don’t see many craft brewed lagers.

However, things may be changing in this regard and soon to be brand new to ANBL shelves is Feels Good Imperial Pilsner made by Picaroons. It has been on tap in Fredericton for some time and now it is ready to be shared and enjoyed with the rest of New Brunswick. feelsgood.ca is an arts, music, and community movement and Picaroons has been kind enough to brand the beer after this organization.

At 7% alcohol this beer can be dangerous as the alcohol is well-masked due to how smooth this beer drinks starts and then the hoppy aftertaste keeps you going back for more. I know this pilsner, a type of lager, will be a regular in my fridge.

Big Tide Brewery, on Princess Street, has had a pilsner on tap and most likely will again. It was quite delicious the few times I had it. It was very clean, with fruity malts, and decently hopped but not overly so. Moosehead Breweries’ Alpine Lager is a clean drinking beer whether by the bottle or draught. Alpine has actual flavour, especially compared to the other mass-market North American lagers it competes with but could use more hops.

Urban Deli will be picking up the Feels Good Imperial Pilsner as soon as it hits the shelves and Alpine is always available at UD along with several other beers by the bottle, always from New Brunswick only.

Follow the businesses listed on twitter: @urbandeli, @SJAH_NB, @picaroons, @loveoffood (Pomodori), and @FeelsGoodMusic.

(Note: The Feels Good Imperial Lager should be on Saint John shelves very shortly. The www.nbliquor.com site shows it is already in several stores. The price will be $3.75 for 500 ml bottle, which is the same price as their other products yet it is 7% alcohol.)

Saint John Alehouse (SJAH) recently held a staff Caesar making competition between co-owner Pete Stoddart and manager Shawn Horgan. The Caesar, when done well, is a divine cocktail that crosses the line between refreshing and savoury.

After seeing a twitter update about the contest made by @SJAH_NB I quickly asked if I could help judge the event. So, by 10 PM I had made my way Uptown to take part in this fun event.

Pete’s Caesar was up first and was quite true to the traditional Caesar with some modifications. First, Pete infused celery stalks in lime rind and juice. He seasoned the drink with lemon pepper rather than regular pepper and served the drink in a hollowed out orange pepper that lent some of its fresh sweetness to the drink.

Shawn’s Caesar was basically its own cocktail inspired by a Caesar and was flavoured with soy sauce, ginger, basil, and was made with a homemade tomato and clam juice. Pete squeaked by with a win at 4 votes to 3.

Find out about the next competition by following @SJAH_NB on twitter.
