Tonight’s the night – Live Life Awards

We’re pretty pumped up about tonight’s Live Life Awards put on by Uptown Saint John. We’re excited partly because the evening proceedings will be held “… in the minimalist ‘white room,’ an architectural gem located on the second floor of 115 Prince William Street.”

And we’re excited because we’re up for an award.

In the ‘Best Restaurant’ category, the nominees are Saint John Ale House, Thandi’s and yours truly, Urban Deli. Best of luck to all three of us!

It’s worth having a look at all the nominees in all the categories. It’s a marvelous cornucopia of the Uptown’s great businesses and some of the exceptional accomplishments over the last year.

If you’re attending the glam event, we hope to see you there. We’ll be on hand and hope to say ‘Hi!’ to everyone.

See you tonight!

We gave away tickets to Black Comedy at the Imperial

Director of 'Black Comedy', Scott Thomas (photo: Noel Chenier/Telegraph-Journal)

We’ve just given away a pair of tickets to Thursday’s performance of Black Comedy, written by Peter Shaffer and on the main stage at the Imperial Theatre. The tickets are thanks to the Saint John Theatre Company and it should be an intriguing and funny show.

Scott Thomas will be directing and the Telegraph-Journal tells us it is his directorial debut and he is, “… the founder of Improvisation Corporation, a group of comedic improvisers who perform a variety of shows and formats around the city.”

Our winner is Kim Atkinson of Saint John. She was pretty excited about winning the tickets. Thanks to everyone who filled out ballots at the restaurant! And by the way …

You don’t have to win tickets to see Black Comedy. It runs Thursday through Saturday this week, March 17 to 19, and you can get tickets by calling the Imperial at 674-4100.

A word about our BBQ sauce

A couple of weeks ago we came upon a great site for foodies called Plato Putas. We stumbled upon it via Twitter because they had a post titled Trip Report: Saint John, N.B., Restaurants. And guess what restaurant they loved? Yes, the Urban Deli.

And yes, we may be slightly biased in our love of their site. 🙂

One of the things they loved at the Deli was our BBQ sauce so we decided to do something we don’t normally do and mail them a bottle. But that also got us thinking … A lot of people have commented on our sauce, so we thought we’d give you a brief word or two about it.

As with any great tasting sauce or dish, the secret to its success is in the blending and proportions of the herbs and other ingredients — all the elements of flavours that make up the condiment or dish.

Now, we can’t give you a detailed recipe — it wouldn’t be much of a kitchen secret then — but we can tell you that it’s a combination of onion, garlic, chili’s’, sugars, vinegars, and one or two special flavours that are brought together to make our Urban Deli Gluten Free BBQ sauce.

Unfortunately, beyond that we can’t really tell you much without giving the secret away. But if you haven’t tried it yet, please pay us a visit and check it out! We’d love to see you!
