Testing the waters – Summer hours and other changes

We’re excited as we put our toes in to test the waters with a few changes we’re introducing starting Sunday, May 8th. (That would be Mother’s Day.)

Beginning Mom’s Day, May 8th (Sunday coming up) we will be open for breakfast/brunch every Sunday from 10 am to 3pm – serving breakfast only.

This means we’ll now be open on both days of the weekend for breakfast:

  • Saturdays for breakfast 9 am to noon, followed by our regular menu till 8:00pm
  • Sunday breakfast/brunch from 10 am to 3pm

And as of Monday, May 9th, we will be closing the Deli at 3pm on Mondays and Tuesdays (but only on Mondays and Tuesdays). This is to allow us to respond to the continued requests to be open on Sundays, especially with the arrival of the warmer months when people are out and about in the Uptown.

We’ll also be using our space on Monday and Tuesday evenings for private functions and possibly cooking classes. So keep us in mind for your private company dinner meetings and send us your cooking class requests.

Once again, beginning this weekend Urban Deli will be welcoming your weekend with our Deli breakfast menu on Saturdays and Sundays. We hope to see you!

Our holiday hours and have a Deli-icious Christmas!

Urban Deli Christmas 2010: Rob, Michael-Ann, Liane, Janna, Fran, Craig, Dale, Gord, Elizabeth, Alan, Vaughan, and Jordan. Missing in the photo: Greg, Phil, Dave, Jenny and Candy.

Wow! It’s here! Like you, we’ve been so busy we barely noticed it coming up on us. But it’s Christmas Eve day now and we know what tomorrow is, so we wanted to pause a moment and say a big thank you to everyone: our wonderful staff, suppliers, all the other Uptown businesses and, with a really big emphasis, our marvelous customers.

Not only have our customers kept us busy, a lot of them have given us great ideas for new things to introduce and on occasion have helped us “taste test” new items to see if they were up to their standards and ours.

It’s amazing how much they’ve helped us this year. So …

Thank you! And we hope everyone, everywhere has a Christmas to remember and a New Year that flies by because it’s so full of new people and things. And may we all be prosperous! Happy holidays!

Speaking of which, these are our hours over the holidays:

Holiday Hours:

  • Dec. 27 to 30: Regular Hours
  • Dec 31 (New Year’s Eve): Special New Year’s Eve dinner seating at 7:00pm — please call ahead (ask for Liz) and reserve.
  • Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day): Enjoy your hangover at the Deli! Breakfast only 9:00am to 3:00pm.

And we’re back to regular hours on January 2, 2011.

Christmas hours and our New Year’s Eve dinner

We thought we should let you in on what will be happening at the Urban Deli over the holiday period, so …

This week, we will be closing Thursday at 2:00pm, just after lunch service, and we will be closed until Monday (Dec. 28) when we reopen for our regular hours at 11:30am.

As for New Year’s week, we are also closing at 2pm on Thursday, (Dec 31). We will then reopen the same evening, New Year’s Eve, at 6:30 pm for our reserved seating New Year’s Eve dinner.

We’ll be serving a five course Italian Dinner on New Years Eve.  The hours will be 6:30 pm to 9:00pm. It promises to be tasty so if you’re interested in joining us there are still a few seats available for booking. Just give us a call at 652-3354 (652-DELI) and we’ll set things up for you.

And while we have the chance, we hope everyone out there has a fabulous Christmas and an even better New Year!

Music on Saturday and our hours get tweaked

We just wanted to remind you that we’re introducing live music. Mike Biggar will be at the Deli tomorrow evening (Saturday) starting at 8:00pm. Have a look at our Live Music page for more info. We’ve also arranged to team up with Wes Jagoe who will be helping us by handling our live music nights. We’re pretty excited about all of this and can’t wait to get the ball rolling (which will be Saturday).

Our hours have had a bit of tweaking as well to accomodate our Live Music. On Saturdays we’ll be open till 10:00pm (or when the music wraps). However, our full menu we’ll be available till 8:00pm, after which we’ll have a limited menu available.

We hope to see you! The last word goes to Liz, who says:

I’m very excited about this part of the business….this is FUN!  Yipee, Yoo, Yaaa, Yeah 🙂

Yes, we’ll be open for New Brunswick Day (Monday)

Just in case anyone might have wondered (because Monday is a holiday), we will be open with our regular 11:00am to 8:00pm hours. So if you’re in Uptown Saint John on Monday, drop in an see us. (Sorry, we’ll be closed on Sunday – but we do hope to be opening on Sundays soon. Really!)

With New Brunswick being the birthday kid on Monday (225 years old!), there are quite a few things going on, many of them in the Market Square area, just down the street from us. You’ll find some information at Tourism Saint John (August events). (En français? Allez ici.) It sounds as if there will be lots of live entertainment.

Also open and celebrating on Monday, and also in Market Square, the New Brunswick Museum. (Si vous préférez la page en français, s’il vous plaît cliquer ici.)

No, our French is not very good. We just thought if someone’s first language was French and they preferred seeing the information that way, it’s easy enough to link to it.

Have a great New Brunswick Day! 225 years ain’t no small thing, you know. That is some kind of history!

About our hours

A few people have pointed out that we haven’t been very clear, here on the site, about our hours. They couldn’t find them anywhere! We did have them in a post but neglected to put them up anywhere obvious. Sorry!

And thanks for the heads up. You’ll now see them posted over in the right hand column, just below our address. You’ll also see an “Hours” page up in our navigation at the top.

Also, while we close at 8:00pm, Liz says, “… As long as your food order is into our kitchen by 8:00pm you can sit back and relax … We won’t rush you out by 8. And we promise not to ask you to help close!” 🙂

Because you asked, our hours will be …

Dan left a comment asking what our hours would be so we went to Liz and asked, “So, what will the hours be?” (We thought it would be good to know when we’d be working.)

So here they are, though this is tentative. (see update at the end of the post). Hours (for the first week, at least):

  • Monday – Saturday 11 a.m. –  8pm

And that’s the plan. We’ll try to make these official very soon, so we don’t have to say “tentative” anymore. Think of the Deli, when it opens, as being in a “beta” stage, as the software people like to say. As we get feedback from people, we’ll likely make changes to make it better and as close to what you expect as possible.

An update:

Thanks to the comments, we realized we should provide a more for information on our hours.

One of the reasons we say “tentative” is because things like the hours the Deli is open could change. Originally, Liz had the Deli going to be open till 11:00pm. But we decided to have it 8:00pm, at least for the first week, to get a sense for how things are operating and what people like and/or don’t like, and what is actually practical.

After the first week, Liz is thinking of having the Urban Deli open till 11:00pm Thursday through Saturday. It’s a bit of a balancing act though between what people would like and what the economics allow us to do. But we definitely would like to be open and available later in the evening for those people looking for somewhere to drop in after a show or other engagement.
