Quinoa, Occasions and Rocky Horror theatre

With the additions to our new menu, we find we get a lot of comments about our quinoa salad. They are usually one of two. A lot of people love quinoa and tell us how much they love the salad. However, there are a lot of people who aren’t familiar with quinoa — or even how it’s pronounced (“keen – wah”).

Quinoa is a grain-like crop grown for its seeds, which are edible. It has a long history as a food source and it’s known for a number of valuable properties. We wrote a bit about in last April when we posted a recipe for quinoa wraps. If you haven’t tried quinoa yet, drop by and give our salad a try. We think you’ll love it too.

Tonight might be a good time, especially if you’re headed to The Rocky Horror Show at the Imperial. The Saint John Theatre company provided us tickets and we gave them away earlier this week to Dan Wheaton (@captainwheaton). We’re not sure how Dan dressed for the show, but if you plan to go tonight and intend to dress for the show (in Rocky Horror style), we would love to see you.

Finally, in the flurry of activity here at the Deli we completely neglected mentioning we are the Restaurant Spotlight in the fall issue of Occasions, the NB Liquor magazine that is available free in all their outlets. If you haven’t seen it already, pick it up the next time you pick up a bottle of wine. You can read about us and also get the usual great recipes Occasions always has.

And that’s our little bit of house-keeping so we can catch up! We’d love to see you today or tonight, over the weekend or any time at all. And let us know what you think of quinoa, Rocky Horror or the piece in Occasions.

Lunch and dinner – Happy Valentine’s Day!

We have our Valentine’s dinner set for this evening, but today for lunch we’re featuring:

  • Pasta Dish … a creamy pesto pasta with sauteed portabello mushrooms, roasted reds and spinach; finished with fresh Parmesan cheese
  • Burger … Bacon and cheddar burger – comes with a side choice

Of course, this evening’s dinner is for the romantically inclined, or even those who just like an excuse to be with each other.

It’s our Valentine’s dinner. Have a look at the menu (.pdf format). We think you’ll like it! You can reserve by simply giving us a call at 652-3354.

And hat’s off to our friends at happinez! Via Uptown Saint John on Facebook, we found out the Ottawa Citizen has picked them as one of the 18 best places to kiss in Canada. (We knew something was going on in those quiet corners.)

Have a great day everyone and we hope to see you this evening!

This gift is easy, simple and tastes good too

Just ask to have one added to your bill next time you are in for a bite to eat.

Just ask to have one added to your bill next time you are in for a bite to eat.

One of the best tasting Christmas gifts you can give or receive this season is an Urban Deli gift card. Why be stressed looking for a gift? We’re hoping we can help make it easy for you.

When you pass by the Deli, or drop in for a bite, just ask us for a gift card — you choose the amount. They make great stocking stuffers and fit quite nicely inside a card. And an Urban Deli gift card can be used at anytime (no expiration date).

The season is about family, friends and — oh, yes! — food.

Enjoy the season! That’s what it’s here for!

Chop Chop “Feast”ival for Foodies

Join us for a variety of Deli-styled Italian dishes which will be available for customers from November 1st to November 6th. Please call us at 506.652.3354 to make reservations for this event.

During our lunch hour, we will be presenting  an Italian pasta special ($12 plus tax) with the option of bruschetta or soup as an appetizer. Customers have the choice of a traditional Italian bolognese sauce or a creamy parmesan sauce which consists of pesto, sautéed mushrooms, roasted red peppers and spinach.

For the evening Chop Chop foodies, reservations can be made for a three course dinner for two ($30 plus tax). The three course dinner consists of bruschetta or soup to start and is followed by the pasta special. This will be finished off with a home-made dulce de leche meringa con gelato e cioccolato (ice-cream meringue topped with dulce de leche and chocolate sauce) dessert for sharing.

We look forward to seeing you during this eventful week!
