Celebrating a special event

This Saturday (August 21st) we will be serving breakfast from 9am until noon and then our lunch menu will begin. This is going to be a special day since Elizabeth Rowe (owner of the Urban Deli) and John Mallory (owner of Kamiza Judo & Training Studio) will be getting married.

In order to celebrate this momentous event, the restaurant will be closing at 3pm. We would like to apologize to customers for cutting our hours .

From all the staff at Urban Deli, we wish Elizabeth & John all the best on their special day!

We had a fabulous weekend …

… And it all started with a incredible Canada Day in Uptown Saint John. Even the dogs were caught up in the feeling we call Canada.

The Deli had a little setup in front of the UD (the restaurant was closed) where we sold breakfast and pulled pork sandwiches outside the doors. We also had cold drinks like our scratch lemonade and ice-tea. It was a fun way to be working and being out meeting people enjoying the day. We have photos on our Facebook page here.

The photo above of Lianne and Liz and our extraordinary helpful helper was just one of loads of photos Beaver Smith took (many thanks!). If you want to really see what Saint John’s Uptown looked like on this Canada day, have a look at his photos.

Canada Day and what we’re up to

We’ll be doing something a little different for Canada Day. The Urban Deli will be closed, but kind of open too. Here’s what we’re doing:

The restaurant will be closed. However, we’ll have a stand directly outside our front doors selling food and cold drinks (alongside the other vendors).

We’re taking it to the streets, so to speak.

We’ll start off with breakfast sandwiches at 9:00am (served on an english muffin) and also have our own scratch lemonade, home-made ice tea and other cold drinks available. If you like samosas, we’ll have those too (not made by the Deli) — five different kinds of samosas that include beef, chicken, lamb, vegetarian and sweet potato.

Once the breakfast sandwiches are either sold out or 11:00am hits, we’ll be switching it up and selling our pulled pork & slaw on an english muffin.

We’re normally closed on Sundays and holidays so all of us (our staff) can enjoy the days, but this time we wanted to be there in Uptown Saint John. It’s Canada Day and we expect the Uptown to be hopping.

And who in their right mind would want to miss a Canada Day in the Port City?

Cooking class – a new first for Urban Deli

cookingclass_201003_03_1A group of twenty or so people convened at the Urban Deli on a sunny Sunday afternoon on March 14th to participate in the first cooking class hosted by UD. The restaurant is normally closed on Sundays, but Liz decided to open up for a few hours to host this reservation-only event. Bob McVicar was the instructing chef and the subject of the day was Italian-style cabbage rolls.

The afternoon began with some informal introductions and delicious snacks (check out this sautéed red pepper recipe), and then we all found seats at the communal table in groups of four. To ensure that the objective of the class was clear, Bob served us each a sample of his Italian cabbage rolls that he had put together a couple of days prior – Bob swears that they are better a few days after making them. We also sampled some homemade Italian sausage that UD has recently started making in-house.

Next, we worked in our groups of four to create some of Bob’s Italian cabbage rolls. We made half of the recipe below, which resulted in a roasting pan full of cabbage rolls. Bob did some of the prep work before we arrived and had already softened and peeled the cabbage leaves off of the head for us as well as having prepared the tomato sauce. Our main tasks were to create the filling and put the rolls together.

Cooking class - be willing to get your hands dirty.Bob’s recipe for the filling is simple to put together and rolling it in the leaves is pretty easy once you get used to it. You’ll need to be willing to get your hands dirty for this dish, so dig in and have some fun. Just follow the recipe and preparation instructions below and you’ll have no problems.

After assembling all of our rolls, we packed them up and topped them with some delicious tomato sauce. Each participant received a portion to take home, at which point they simply had to be baked and served fresh, saved for a few days before eating, or placed in the freezer to consume at a later date.

cookingclass_201003_05_1The cooking class was an enjoyable afternoon and a great value at only $12 per person, which was to help cover some of the costs. Beverages were also available to purchase and the snacks continued to flow throughout the afternoon. This cooking class was a successful first for UD and I suspect that there will be many more to come. Stay tuned to urbandeli.ca for info about future cooking classes that Liz has in the works.

We’ve had a few winners

On our counter we have a bowl for business cards. If you’ve put your card in there, or if you do the next time you visit the Urban Deli, you’ll be in the running to win a little something from us. But first things first, we have a couple of winners already.

The first winner of a free lunch at the Deli is Reid Southwick. Reid is a reporter from the Telegraph-Journal. His was the first card we drew from the jar.

We also had another winner. We drew Mike Hachey’s card. Mike’s from Califorina Custom Auto. Congratulations to both Reid and Mike and thank you for taking the time to visit and have a bite at the Urban Deli.

We’ve decided to do this with a bit more regularity so our next draws will be in the first week of March and the first week of every month thereafter. Also, with that next draw (early March) we’ll actually do two draws. One for a book, another for a free lunch.

The first book up for grabs is Tatya: Moscow Nights, Book I of Miron Rezun’s Tatya Trilogy. The other draw will be for a free lunch at the Urban Deli. If we draw yours, you’ll be joining Rick and Mike in the winner’s circle!

Upcoming townhall with FUSION Saint John

Yes, we’ve been a little slow out of the gate as far as the new year and our online activity goes but we haven’t been slow as far as the actual Urban Deli goes. We’ve been active!

One thing we wanted to make you aware of, if you aren’t already, is what is going on January 13th (next Wednesday). FUSION Saint John will be presenting a townhall as, “Leader of the Official Opposition David Alward talks to FUSION Saint John.” It’s an informational meeting running from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

For more information or to RSVP, visit FUSION on their Facebook page.

We imagine it will be an interesting evening and we’re thrilled FUSION chose the Urban Deli to put this on. By the way, to keep up on all their upcoming events, you’ll find it all here on the FUSION Saint John site.

A wrap and a jam (food and music)

What a week! The Chop Chop “Feast”-ival is a wrap and it sounds like a lot of people enjoyed a lot of good food from a lot of Uptown’s diverse restaurants. Including the Urban Deli! We received some really nice compliments about our Montreal Smoked Meat pizza.

Terry WhalenAnd wow! Did we ever have fun Saturday night with Terry Whalen and his performance. Our music man Wes Jagoe joined him later, as did a few others, and they were jamming for quite some time. Here’s what our man Wes had to say:

Terry Whalen’s performance Saturday night was a roller coaster mix of good old rockin’ country and grass roots blues right from the delta itself; a one man army not afraid to chance the trenches for the sake of the song.

His own songs were well delivered pieces of love and woe tapestries, all introduced by a story. Terry performed a great range of music. Yes, from AC/DC’s “It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll,” all the way to John Cougar’s “Pink Houses.”  And it was all glued together with an oozing baritone tinge.

Hats off to a great performance.

Saturday coming up, we’ll have Andrew Clark and we expect we’ll have just as much fun. Hope you can join us!
