Simplify with a yummy gift

Just ask to have one added to your bill next time you are in for a bite to eat.

Finding the right gift can sometimes be a challenge. The year is full of gift-giving occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, graduations … and yes, the day that is beginning to loom on the calendar for later next month.

(Is it too early to mention it by name?)

We have an idea for you, especially when you’re trying to find something for a foodie friend: an Urban Deli gift card. It may look small and unassuming, but it tastes wonderful! 🙂

When you pass by the Deli, or drop in for a bite, just ask us for a gift card — you choose the amount. They fit quite nicely inside a card. And an Urban Deli gift card can be used at anytime (no expiration date).

There is no need to be stressed trying to come up with a gift idea. You can simplify with one of our cards. And keep in mind, you don’t need a special occasion to give someone you care about a gift. Sometimes the best ones are those that come from right out of the blue.

When will we be on the Food Network?

We get asked — frequently! — when will the show on the Food Network featuring Urban Deli and Saint John Ale House be aired and the answer is pretty straight forward: we don’t know.

The show is called You Gotta Eat Here! and it’s hosted by John Catucci. But it’s air date hasn’t been determined. The show will begin airing on the Food Network in the new year — probably January. The date for the episode that features Urban Deli airs hasn’t been set, so we can’t give you a date.

But rest assured … When we know, we’ll let you know! If you’re anxious to see the episode, imagine how we feel! We’re very excited to see our Saint John featured, especially when it’s focused on the Uptown with Urban Deli and Saint John Ale House.

So, keep following us here or on Facebook or Twitter … and we’ll give you a heads up when we’re in the know.

The Food Network pays us a visit for a new show

The Food Network is paying Saint John a visit for their new show, You Gotta Eat Here! And we’re way excited because we’re one of the restaurants they’ll be visiting for the show.

On Friday and Saturday they’re going to be taping at our friends, Saint John Ale House. On Sunday and Monday, they’re taping here at Urban Deli.

We’d love for you to join us for Monday’s taping (the 17th), during lunch 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. But please call us and make a reservation at 652-3354.

And what’s this Food Network show all about? Two words: comfort food. Here’s how they describe it:

You Gotta Eat Here! sends our charming, funny and food-obsessed host, comedian John Catucci, on a quest to find Canada’s most delicious, mouthwatering, over-the-top comfort food.  He’s visiting great joints, greasy spoons, and legendary restaurants to taste the food that made them famous, and to meet the colourful characters that make each one of them institutions.

It should be fun. John Catucci is a pretty funny guy and it sounds as if he knows his comfort food. We’re fired up with the idea of them coming to see us and we hope you’ll join us so we can give them a real Uptown Saint John welcome. Hope to see you Monday!

Quinoa, Occasions and Rocky Horror theatre

With the additions to our new menu, we find we get a lot of comments about our quinoa salad. They are usually one of two. A lot of people love quinoa and tell us how much they love the salad. However, there are a lot of people who aren’t familiar with quinoa — or even how it’s pronounced (“keen – wah”).

Quinoa is a grain-like crop grown for its seeds, which are edible. It has a long history as a food source and it’s known for a number of valuable properties. We wrote a bit about in last April when we posted a recipe for quinoa wraps. If you haven’t tried quinoa yet, drop by and give our salad a try. We think you’ll love it too.

Tonight might be a good time, especially if you’re headed to The Rocky Horror Show at the Imperial. The Saint John Theatre company provided us tickets and we gave them away earlier this week to Dan Wheaton (@captainwheaton). We’re not sure how Dan dressed for the show, but if you plan to go tonight and intend to dress for the show (in Rocky Horror style), we would love to see you.

Finally, in the flurry of activity here at the Deli we completely neglected mentioning we are the Restaurant Spotlight in the fall issue of Occasions, the NB Liquor magazine that is available free in all their outlets. If you haven’t seen it already, pick it up the next time you pick up a bottle of wine. You can read about us and also get the usual great recipes Occasions always has.

And that’s our little bit of house-keeping so we can catch up! We’d love to see you today or tonight, over the weekend or any time at all. And let us know what you think of quinoa, Rocky Horror or the piece in Occasions.

Over the moon with our social media nomination

Saint John has its first ever social media awards, The Saltys – a celebration of the Saint John Social Media Community. It’s set for February 17 just down the road from us at the Saint John Ale House. And guess what? Urban Deli is a nominee! We’re over the moon!

We’re nominated in the category “Best Use of Social Media in a Campaign” for customer engagement. Actually, it’s really our customers who should be getting the tip of the hat. You guys have been fabulous on our blog, Facebook page and on Twitter. And you’ve kept us on our toes!

We’re not always as on top of things as we would like. Being a small operation, our main focus is the kitchen and the restaurant, so we can’t always be engaging people online to the extent we would like to. So for the record, we would like to say a big “Thank you!” to everyone for the RTs and wonderful comments we’ve seen in our feeds.

Huge congratulations as well to all the nominees in all the categories. Looking at the list is a bit like looking at a list of friends. We’re pretty sure we know everyone there.

Urban Deli has been using social media for some time now. We started on Twitter in March of 2009 – that’s almost two years ago – and started our Facebook page not long after. It was lot of figuring out how to use this social media thing (we bumbled a lot with the Facebook part initially) but it became very clear, very soon that social media was about one thing: people.

So it really is a lot like being in the restaurant where we get to interact with our customers face to face. With social media, we do the same thing, just not face to face.

Once again, we’re very excited that Saint John now has its own social media awards — The Saltys — and even more excited to see we’ve been nominated.

By the way, the online voting is now on. Cast your vote while you can and we hope to see all of you February 17 for the big party!

Thank you again Saint John!
