It’s back! Saint John’s Chop Chop Fall Restaurant Week, October 22 to 28. We’ve put our heads together and have come up with Urban Deli’s menu, below:

Roasted Garlic & Artichoke Dip

Warmed filo pastry bowl filled with house made roasted garlic and artichoke dip served with a side of seasoned chips
Note…while quantities last for the plate due to a specialty product

Shazam! Shishito (Shi-Shi-To) Peppers

A mild variety of chili pepper sauteed in oil until slightly blistered and finished with a light dusting of finishing salt. 1 in 10 are hot! Served with lemon slice – be daring!

Ramen noodle in a flavourful broth and topped with: marinated grilled sriracha chicken / green onion / cucumber / shredded carrot / fresh cilantro / julienned napa cabbage / poached egg / fried dulse chips / house made Ramen sauce

Winter Chop Chop 2018 – UD Goes Brazilian!

Urban Deli decided to throw a wider net this year to look for deli style food from around the world.

This year our 2018 Winter Chop Chop is celebrating Brazil’s Carnival. Brazil’s Carnival week was originally a food festival that celebrated the last time to eat abundantly before Lent, a period of frugality. It ties in nicely to Uptown Saint John’s celebration of our food week: Chop Chop, which lives on through generous donations to the Lunch Connection twice a year.

Urban Deli’s CHOP CHOP Lunch includes:

  1. Brazilian Baked Ham & Cheese Sandwich (Bauru de Forno) – Layers of baked flavour!
  2. Brazilian Vinaigrette Salad (Pico de Gallo) – Balances the richness of the sandwich
  3. Dessert: Brazilian Cinnamon Rain Drop Doughnuts (Bolinhos de Chuva) – perfect sweet finish!

It’s back: Chop Chop Saint John, the Winter 2017 edition, just in time to help us all beat back the snow and frost of the season with the palate delighting tastes of our Uptown. Here’s what we’ve planned for the Deli…

First Course:

The Tasty Trio of Sliders – We tried to settle on just one but couldn’t decide so we went with all three!

One of each:

  • Zesty Buffalo Chicken – Two pieces of breaded chicken tossed in our zesty buffalo sauce with a drizzle of blue cheese dressing, lettuce and tomato

AND…

  • Italiano – Large house-made pork and beef meatball with mozzarella and parmesan and our house-made marinara sauce.

AND…

  • Spicy Pork Bulgogi – Asian inspired spicy pork with a thick cut of cucumber and slaw

Second Course:

  • One of our famous house-made frogs paired with the cookie of the day

Chop Chop Menu and General Tso at the Deli

A rough idea of what our General Tso chicken sandwich will look like.

Chop Chop arrives at Urban Deli with the question, “Who or what is General Tso?” Well, the who is General Tso Tsung-tang, a Qing Dynasty general from Hunan (China). But it is the what associated with his name that drew our attention and spurred our culinary creativity.

General Tso is an Asian chicken dish, a bit sweet and a bit spicy. Of course, we’re not doing General Tso’s chicken in the usual way. We’re doing our take on it, and making it a sandwich for Chop Chop 2016! This is our Chop Chop menu this year:

General Tso’s Chicken Sandwich

tso’s is prounounced ‘so’ (the ‘t’ is silent)

boneless breaded deep-fried chicken pieces tossed in a sweet, slightly spicy sauce.  Served on warm grilled soft bread, topped with sesame seeds, fresh cucumber slices, shaved carrot, green onion

served w/ a ramakin side of housemade slaw
(green apple, purple and green cabbage, onion, carrots, fresh lime, chilis)

Our Chop Chop Week Urban Deli Lunch

Day One of Chop Chop Week is under our belts and we loved it. It’s great seeing people in the Uptown tasting all the great fare the chefs have created. Where do you start? If you weren’t by the Deli today, you have a week to come in and try what our team has put together – it’s yummy to say the least!

By the way, each meal purchased means a donation to Lunch Connection. Here’s our Chop Chop menu for this year:

First Course

Start with our house made fall flavoured butternut squash, carrot & sweet potato soup with ginger, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg and cream

Second Course

Move on to a deliciously grilled euro-wrap sandwich with a must-try bread: light and delicious! Grilled chicken breast with a balsamic glaze drizzle, melted Brie, chutney, garlic aioli, crisp bacon, greens
